Rove organized a push-poll and whisper campaign on Richards, focusing on very conservative towns and cities. The push-poller would call and say something like "Would you still support Anne Richards if you found out she hired lesbians, and was one herself?" People in Austin laughed, but around the state they took it seriously. Rove used similar dishonest push-polls in South carolina against McCain. There his people used "WOuld you support McCain if you knew he had a bastard child with a black prostitute?" Rove like Lee Atwater always distances himself from these dirty tricks. TYhere may be no paper evidence in existence Rove was behind these, but you bet he was. This is a specialty of his. Lee Atwater used the Willie Horton ads to beat Dukakis, but used surrgates as well so Bush Sr. could deny having anything to do with it. Of course the biggest of all was the 2004 smearvets campaign against Kerry. Rove was totally in charge of that and it was all 100% lies.
