Saving is spending less than you make.
It does not take into account asset appreciation, asset depreciations, bankruptcies, stocks falling to zero or anything else.

When I say the savings rate will go up, I am suggesting that people will stop spending more than they make.

That act will obviously not be good for consumption and therefore the stock market by implication.

How did we come out of 1931 depression? Only because there were quite a lot of hard working souls that made productive machineries. Today, who is going into Graduate program let alone PHDs!! Today, professors make less money than undergrad students in wall street and IT!! The profs have been thoroughly demoralised! Today nobody gives research funding to universities. It is all going to China, India and most of the research in US are in finance!! I think recovery will be difficult and longer this time as the maladjustment and demoralization has gone for too long. The "critical mass" to rebuild the nation might not be there.

Understand one of my sisters worked as a medical technologist/lab tech for 20 years, got tired of being on her feet all the time and the strange hours so gave up the 30 an hour job to make minimum wage - all cars and houses for this individual has been supplied by daddy. The other works as a coach because that is "fun" and also has had all cars and houses and such supplied by parents - hubby along for the free ride - between the both of them we are talking about 900K just in the past 15 years. When daddy needed a kidney though - they said NO - thats not FUN daddy. (perhaps I am a hypocrite - I have asked him to go to india and buy one and offered to pay for the operation and also am not excited about giving up one of my kidneys - niether have offered to pay for this operation or any part of it and I have asked)

Such selfishness! One sister took one of daddy's accounts - about 400K and blew to high heaven and shopping sprees - over several decades I have tried to understand this mentality in my own parents and what I see in others - I cannot rationlize it or understand it - My friends several years into being parents say you cannot understand until you have kids of your own shades and spend a few years raising them - they become your reason to live - their future is all that matters to you - I sit down with them and watch Richard Gere in that movie internal affairs where he said he murdered people for his kids and say I see! HAHA! Did ken lay committ suicide for his wife and kids?

Even near death my father would shoot you and then himself if it would give his princess another day of "americana" Sadly I see this same thinking in many people in this country when it comes to princess. The teachers are paid low - but the beautiful movie stars make millions - our society has shown what is important - image is everything. People pay far more for entertainment than education. Some nights I am in true astonishment that with hate and anger so much easier to extract from most people I meet than love and forgiveness that mankind is not killing more across the globe.
