I checked my original build files for the "mail on" provision ... can't seem to find it, darnnit. Since the element consists of two changes (the roll changes both the background + text), you probably won't find *one* text colour that works. A simpler solution in the logic might be to reverse the existing roll. That is, adjust td.nav01 a:hover and a:link for the mail question:

"new mail?" Yes =
td.nav01 a:link {
background: #D6D6A3;
color: #336699; ...}

td.nav01 a:hover {
background: #999966;
color: #FFFFFF; ...}

"new mail?" No =
td.nav01 a:link {
background: #999966;
color: #FFFFFF; ...}

td.nav01 a:hover {
background: #D6D6A3;
color: #336699; ...}

Or, alternatively for "new mail = Y", background still D6D6A3, but color = 666600 or CC3300

re:"We never have figured out why the top strap background colors are ugly shades of green on some monitors"

Probably a colour bit depth setting in display control panel on that machine, inadvertantly set to 8-bit (256), or just an old monitor gone bad?
