Another issue with the "blink" is that some users use the mail box itself as a file holder, for stuff that isn't important enough to make a real file folder, but they still want to keep the item around for a while. The blink would be continually blinking at them for an annoyingly long time. Some users keep their mailbox at a near-constant "zero", filing or deleting asap. However, for those who tend to keep a few PMs around for an extended period, it would be a strain, for sure.

Web denizens have spent the last 10 years trying to eradicate that tag, and thankfully, like smallpox, ...

Then on second thought, after playing with colors, keep it white, as white does not take away from the site design. Has to be a way to make that sucker blink, and a user option would be a good idea. Blink just for new unread messages only.
