In a global economy, watching the US as if it was its own world makes no sense.
Yes and no.
The no is more important.
Jobs created in China at the expense of jobs created in the US does the US no good. And that is more or less what is happening with the exception of housing related jobs and nursing.

Watching the US if you live or work in the US makes 100% perfect sense. If you are arguing that over time the US will be come less significant to the world I agree completely but that will take a a long time and still not negate the importance of the US to those living here.
