I didn't intend that. I wasn't thinking "motive" when you asked "why?". Perhaps I should have had motive in mind given the discussion upstream but it wasn't. "Motive" suggests something rational and I don't find it all that rational. It's visceral for the most part. I see one of those fill-in-the-blank derangement syndromes which produces a reaction, not a motive. Syndromes tend to be a grab bag of symptoms and influences. But to the extent that there's a motive, my guess would be to undermine the dreaded Times so that it has less influence.

What do you think GWB's motive for increasing executive power is?

He wants to do what he thinks needs to be done the way he wants to do it and he doesn't want to screw around with the cumbersome and resistant system.
