Worse, they intentionally undermine the current efforts by exposing means and methods of intelligence gathering.

I've heard this argument before, but I've never seen the offending passages pointed out.

Can you define exactly which means and methods were compromised?

How do you differentiate between "questioning" and "undermining"? Seems to me that by asking the questions they asked and raising the issues they raised, the NYT was instantly deemed underminers by one faction.

If you dilute questioning too far, it becomes, OK, Mr. President, are you doing anything you shouldn't in the WOT?

Of course I am not.

You would let us know if you were, right?

Of course. I am your leader. You can trust me.

Meanwhile the exigencies of the eternal WOT require that nothing the administration does be held up to scrutiny, lest we undermine the effort. So nothing ever comes to light to be questioned.

You see the morass this pattern falls into.
