I got back from Maui 2 weeks ago. Our beachfront hotel was booked for the summer. Locals said restaurants were raising prices. Gasoline was $3.60 per gallon for regular and I didn't care since I didn't drive much and a week's gas was a $24, about 1% of the cost for the hotel and car.

McDonalds had help wanted at $10/hr. I told my brother they have to pay more than they do in CA because the swim is more difficult than the Rio Grande. -g-

Lower oil price will only cause the wheels spin backwards - GM is trying to sell the hummer with a $1.99 gas price protection??!! Do we need this?
Greenspan praised (oil) speculators (not housing speculators) as they help accelerate the move towards higher efficiency.
When I heard this statement first I got bent out of shape but he's correct. Amazingly fuel consumption in US was up 1.4% on a year to year comparision (picked this up a couple weeks ago).
High fuel price could be a great opportunity for the car makers that have the technology - the energy pinch could be a "new deal" focusing on how to improve efficiency.
Most industries need a kick in the bud to come up with better products (at lower price), Moore's law is a constant kick in the bud forcing the industry to come up with better products every 18 months or so.
20 years ago Jeep was part of French corporation (Renault?)and you could buy a fuel efficient Jeep with a turbo charged Diesel engine but it took 20 years to get that car with a fuel efficient engine in the US.
Big oil has little or no interest to get US consumer off from fuel consumption addiction but things are about to change.
As Greenspan said : "it's like watching the grass growing" -
listening to Greenspancan can cause head aches but once in a while there is a bright spot I can follow Greenspam.
Tweaking up/down interest rates is actually a very primitive way to tweak the economy.
The problem for FED is the response time or delay in feedback data - a push towards recession would only trigger a reduction in rate; rates seem to go either up or down for a long time while rates stay constant for only a short time period. It's constant tweak up tweak down.
Also I notice Homedepot and other companies offer "zero" interest after baking it into the price.
Looks like higher rates could actually force inflationary pressure as companies are trying to bake higher rates into the price.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD will be manufactured at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit. The 3.0-liter CRD engine is built at the Mercedes-Benz Berlin Marienfelde Plant in Berlin, Germany. Pricing will be announced closer to availability.

Don: Have you noticed this article from the NY Times.

Message 22608697

The US$100 surprised shortfall in U.S. budget deficit will cause increased confidence in the U.S. dollar, and thus increased international flow of capital into the United States. In previous Presidential Cycles, we never had such a spectacular run in the world's emerging markets in the first two years of the Presidential term. This time a great deal of funds invested in the emerging markets will be coming back to the United States, and thus lend a firm support to the domestic stock market.

Take a look at the action in SMSC this morning. They beat earnings estimates and raised guidance, The stock is up 19% in premarket action:

If the rest of the semiconductors rally like this on good news or sell off so little on bad news like AMD did on Friday then these stocks could at least lead higher again for a while.

It will be interesting.
