First, a point of agreement. I agree with you that the USS Cole was a valid military target, as are other military targets inside the boarders of mideastern states.

I'm glad we can start with a point of agreement.

Your way, making sure of who did the 9-11 acts and why, and then trying to pacify them, is a bit too pacifist for my way of thinking.

I didn't say we would pacify those who attacked us. We certainly didn't try to pacify the original WTC bombers. Justice must be done, but we got the right guys in that case and need to do the same in this one.

Yes, I do have a problem with torturing and kicking the crap out of folks who are completely innocent or maybe only marginally involved. I think it is counter-productive and even immoral. It also reveals a touch of racism that is extremely uncomfortable to me: Kill 'em all and let Allah sort them out is no way to run a foreign policy.

I also think it would invite even more attacks as others, with even more "reasons" tried to "express" themselves and get a hearing for even more concessions. As you pacify one group, you encourage a dozen others.

If we are negotiating, they have no reason to resort to terror to get our attention. Besides, what is it they want? It may be something we could gladly give them or at least reach an agreement.

I do not see terror tactics against us ever ceasing until a dialogue is established. This approach is not weakness, it is strength and it is the only way to ever stop the madness. We cannot kill our way out of it, nor should we even want to.

We have to approach this in such a way that we keep our moral and ethical values. I don't see that happening now, although maybe we are grudgingly being pulled that way.
