"That save on Zidane's header was the play of the day." .... It was clearly the save of the tournament.

Zidane had a great tournament and, arguably, deserved the best player award. Buffon, Cannavaro, and Pirlo all played fabulously. It would be reasonable to say that Italy was simply a great team and its excellent trio split the vote, letting Zidane win the award.

It is incomprehensible to me that Italy won the World Cup with Totti as barely a shadow of himself (his broken foot in February was really serious) and Nesta knocked out in the first round against the Czech Republic. Nesta is a wonderful player. This is the third World Cup in a row in which he got injured.

My lasting memories of this World Cup will be Argentine. Some of their goals were pure magic and, I think, their team was the best. But "Zizou" and Italy in the final in his retirement game is more than anyone can request ... and then the headbutt. Isn't life strange?
