Turkey seems relatively free with a relatively open press

Turkey has a history of radical secularization, along with radical ethnic clearing. But even they seem to be backsliding with a Islamic ruling party.

Of course, we could venture back a century or two, when Turkey, aka the Ottoman Empire, did rule Greece and the Balkans. Then it was convert or pay up jizrah.
