CJ, there is a fine line between citizen review of national security measures and headline grabbers designed to sell more papers.

I only bring up Kobe Bryant's accuser because it's an example of something the mainstream media still holds sacred: a rape victim's anonymity. Even the public's "right to know" seemed to stop there.

"yet when it comes to national security issues the NY Times feels free to put millions at risk."

What on earth are you talking about? The SWIFT program? The terrorists knew they were being monitored. Which is why they switched to cash couriers years ago. What wasn't known is that everyone is being monitored. For years. And the program has almost no oversight. Or are you talking about the wiretapping? The terrorists know that their phone conversations are being monitored. Which is why they switched to stolen cellphones for single use and physical couriers years ago. What wasn't known is that everyone is being monitored. For years. And the program has almost no oversight.

See a pattern here? The only ones not in on the secret are the citizens of the US. An important concept to keep in mind here is a statement that is often attributed to Ben Franklin. "Those who are willing to give up Liberty for temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety".

Well said.

Earlier in a post, you talked about how you support Israel in the current mess. I do as well but I am annoyed that Israel is using the same message its used in the past......in fact, the Israeli ambassador to the US said it earlier today; that is, that Israel is defending itself but at the same time they are doing it to keep the problems of the ME from spreading to the rest of the world [meaning the USA]. In reality, Israel is defending itself......period. That is a noble enough effort and its not necessary to guilt the rest of the world in the process. It seems to me there is a point in time when we have to accept that Israel and SKorea are not the 51st and 52nd states.
