"We know what it looks like when we see it in a viable state but we don't really account fully for its tendency to show up, wander around and sneak off"

I'm obviously not going to be able to follow where you are wandering here. There is no controversy that I know of that would make the prevalence of life a zero sum equation. At one time this planet was incapable of supporting any forms of life. This is not controversial. Life is a rare commodity that is fragile and demanding of specific conditions depending on the life form being discussed.

Whereas we understand all forms of matter to be "energy" regardless of the quality or state...we reserve the concept of life to a rare and fragile portion of the energy/matter spectrum.

I agree that it is not always easy to define what is and what is not alive. Some definitions of life are less demanding than others. But this is a subtly of degree not of order.

When a person dies nothing is witnessed sneaking about or wandering. Life is not a substance. LIfe is a a particular characteristic of certain forms of existence.
