Excerpts from The Chip Insider®’s Weather Report:

Order activity was surprisingly strong considering that SEMICON West is almost upon us. There was an amazing number of people on the road, indicating many deals are about to close. Normally, everything slows down appreciably as ‘West’ approaches. Everyone is grounded in preparations and pre-briefings. So, the first half is closing out as a hot one. The second half looks like it’s in the bag as well. Moreover, the WSTS and electronics data for May was as much positive as April was negative, keeping our forecast for the year on track. Though the CPPI did show some weakness, stocks suddenly turned up.

There were only two shootout announcements. Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology has purchased a SUSS MA200Compact Mask Aligner for its central research facility in Korea. SAIT will use the production aligner from SUSS MicroTec for various R&D projects, such as the fabrication of MEMS and Display Devices. Amtech Systems announced a $2 million order for its Tempress diffusion furnace systems from an existing customer in China. These systems, along with the $3 million of solar orders announced Thursday, are scheduled for shipment in the next three to six months.
