One minor point that I don't like is that the protagonist (who is in effect you, as you are making the choices) is very anti-Thatcher in all the different possible outcomes for his life.

Quite common. I call it the "Playboy Philosophy" problem. When Hef wrote his tome back in the 60's, he came up with a libertarian framework and socialistic programs. One didn't follow the other. Writers tend to do the same thing. Analysis leads them to a "leave everyone else alone" outlook, then emotion leads them to an "if I ruled the world" outcome.
