TJ, Majority of the normal people only perceive that what happens long after it has happened. Only after has been a solid fact.

Very few people notice the fact happening before their eyes. A very tiny minority see it before it happens.

Geopolitically, countries when returning to their natural size go into the defensive. Since Reagan the US no longer has the initiative. The majority still not knowing that, expect the US to solve the problems as it was in the 50's.

Power has been diluted. That's why you need a coalition to get something done. But note that the US is a single entity, whose interests today is not shared by the majority of the countries in the world. There are very few countries that would embark behind the US.

See who are not going along the US.

LATAM

Muslim world

Caucasus Istans

Southeast Asia

Western Europe

Remains behind the US a few former satellites of the USSR

A few Africans countries and whom else can be bribed to vote with the US.

Now inside the US people are interested in things and facts that do not affect the rest of the world. There are not many people who think that terrorism is a major problem. That because they tend to think US is to be blamed for the terror inflected on them.

There are many people who don't think the economic model of the US is the best

There are many people who think social democracy is best for them.
There are many people who are forced fed by their press a social democracy view that make them afraid of the US model.

There are a few people who are envious of the US wealth and power

There are many people who has no guts to compete and are afraid of hyper competitive US model.

There are a few countries for whom a US out of the way is good for their economies.

It is what is :)

Rather than what we might think is optimal. I never got the Venezuela issue. I think N. Korea is an issue and Iran potentially. Iraq never really was. But agree that Pakistan is probably bigger than both.

Arrogant stupidity (or should that be stupid arrogance?)

Iran and Pakistan are both very dangerous, but Pakistan is on the back burner. Iran/Syria/Hamas/Hezbollah is boiling over on the front burner.
