The link below is to an article about Sayid Qutb, and it is an excellent introduction to the philosophy and ideology of today's islamist extremist movements. It's a must read, imo, for anyone who wants to develop any real understanding of the largest and most important conflict of our time. As strange as it may sound, this conflict is religious in nature. We have been dragged into a religious war after decades and even centuries of enlightenment, during a period in our own history when we can hardly even understand what the term means.

We understand money, oil, power. But even many of those among us who are religious can hardly comprehend the concept of jihad - of going to war for God. Westerners forgot long ago how seriously they took their religion during the time of the Crusades.

To International Jihad fighters Chechnya, Kashmir, Gaza, Kosovo, Iraq etc. - are all merely different parts - fronts - of the same global war. The same individuals often take rotations fighting in many of these wars. Their goal is to radicalize the Muslim world to a point when they would be able to capture political power in their respective nations.

"Meddling" and mistakes do occur all the time - my point wasn't that they do not happen... they always did - my point was that things go deeper and are far more complex then the self serving laundry lists of complaints presented by extremists.

(edit - btw, Chechnya had plenty of wars with Russia long, long before oil was found to be of any practical use)
