Understand "witness" in the context of reasonable grounds for belief. There are no reasonable grounds to believe that "life" sneaks out of people or viruses or squirrels when they die and wanders about. It is possible--but it is no more evidenced than that invisible bottles of beer slip out of people when they die and wander about.
