Yes, based upon my experience it certainly is. I can't remember exactly, but you may have to fill out an application to have the IRA become a "margin" account.

It wouldn't surprise me if IB customer service gave you wrong info, or gave you the wrong impression

However, I have used IB extensively for Canadian stock trading and have been very pleased. It is truly "direct access" Canadian trading, unlike this "bogus" "direct access trading" that other brokerages claim to have. Without true "direct access trading" one is most likely a) working with inefficiency b) getting slow fills c) getting ripped off in some (or many) fashion d) all of the above
