Yes, they are scary but they're an ever-shrinking minority which is, I believe, one of the sources of the anger. They feel like everybody else is their enemy, true, and that's another reason why they're angry, but it also causes people to reject their POV. The hard core is getting smaller but more vocal, and the only voices they really listen to are their own.

FWIW, I think the Mc Carthy era had that kind of hatred buzzing around, and during Vietnam some people experienced that kind of anger/hate- and the republic survived. That kind of hate is exhibited by a small fraction of the population in this country- the enclaves on SI are small, and filled mostly with the same voices. Most people on SI don't give in to that kind of thing. I think if you really look at who is spouting the hate, you'll see it's a small crew (thank goodness).

Lately Lindy Bill put out a post about the personal attacking and it read very well. I was quite impressed. From then on all I read on his thread were attacks... I was surprised when Bill himself made unkind remarks.. Now, that is a pretty homogeneous thread and there isn't much disagreement.. . A lot of haters and of course liberals are the death of this country and all it's values and what is stands for and so on. However, I think that Dale's thread albeit not TRULY CENTERED as one can read about on other threads who criticize it.... has a certain amount of decorum. It also has respect for other opinions.. AND best of all... not everyone wears blinders...(:) I agree with you about the amount of hate out there. It makes me very upset. How can someone really hate another AMERICAN and hope to have solidarity behind anything the government does when it is calling the pot calling the kettle black.
