I felt terrible about saying anything- but I do so support Shiloh's point. If we want polite behavior, we need to tell people what we expect. That doesn't mean we'll always get what we want, but at least it allows us to discuss standards.

It's especially important, I think, to know that someone with whom you are talking isn't just using you to entertain posters on another thread. To a certain amount discussions entail trust- trust that the conversation is actually a conversation, and not some sort of cover for other activities. I will never understand why people feel so put out that they can't just talk to everyone they want to talk to on SI, and have access to every thread no matter what ther past behavior has been- real life isn't like that. People in real life will cut you off if you act badly, or even in a way that doesn't comport with social norms.
