You wrote that the "Palestinians" are the "weaker party", but again you ignore the larger issue. It's not "Palestinians versus Israelis". It is "Arabs versus Jews", and the Arabs are not the weaker side.

Hey, that's my line! Seriously, Arafat's PR genius was to turn the image of the conflict from 6 million Israelis vs 300 million Arabs to an Israeli tank against a Palestinian boy with a rock, which was tremendously damaging to Israel. Current events are turning the image back to reality; this is to Israel's advantage, since this conflict is fought as much in the media as on the ground.

As for the military odds, Israel has a peace treaty with Jordan and Egypt. The Arabs have given up on winning conventional wars with Israel. Certainly neither Egypt nor Jordan intends to be dragged into war for the sake of Hamas and Hizbullah. The Lebanese don't love the Israelis but don't want to be dragged into another war with them on behalf of Syria and Iran.

Everything Sharon worked for seems to be falling apart in his absence.
