Steve, reading most of the reports, it would seem that you are right - I doubt that they are unanimous, but the majority, apparently, would like to see "the US out of Iraq". It seems that the Iraqi Sunnis - who have in the past politically dominated and oppressed the majority, which are Shi'a - are resentful about their loss of power. They think that the Shi'a "unfairly" benefited from the removal of Saddam Hussein's regime by the Americans. By fighting back they are protecting the centuries long status quo between themselves and the Shi'a. You conveniently completely separate religion and social issues - that can't be done Everyone but everyone are fully aware of the "social" issues. Tell me, if to the Islamists this is a Jihad, a holy struggle where there can be no defeat... in other words, a religious war, a War for God - does this make it "religious" for us as well? I am not sure about the answer at this time. But I am absolutely sure that trying to understand how the world looks from THEIR perspective.... is not a bad idea.
