Overall, I just think it is premature to dismiss Microsoft as competition.

Always true- but I have to say- people seem to dismiss anybody else's dominance much quicker than they do msft in anything.

Both itunes and Google are dominant and market leaders. Getting people off these is near impossible. It can be done, maybe but not without some stellar advance. MSFT isn't going to be able to do it with a me-too product. When ipod took over the MP3 biz, there was no dominant player.

It seems like all reports have Zune working with itunes. That is no way to dominance for msft.

I think so as well but given msft's track record for getting things out on time, I think it is wise to be skeptical of claims of product introduction dates.

<<The breadth of their technology allows them to target a variety of new services>>

I am not sure what you mean by this.

<<No argument that Microsoft might be late, though I dont think that the Vista launch will have any effect. I would imagine that they are two entirely different groups with very little overlap >>

The real reason for the iPod's success is the integration between the hardware and the software. Msft is having issues on the software side with Vista. Will they also have problems on the software side of Zune and media player? If they release a product with the present iteration of windows and then release Vista, will it just work or will there be significant issues? Lots of questions here.

<< I've heard absolutely nothing on the new iPods but I have no doubt that they are in the pipeline.>>

There has been plenty written on what Apple might be coming up with in the next iPod. Apple does have a policy of secrecy around new products which is not quite the same for MSFT. If there is not much out there about an Apple product except conjecture, that is situation normal. It usually doesn't work that way for MSFT.

FWIW, Samsung said yesterday that they hadnt seen any delays or cancellations from their major NAND customers. They were obviously implying that Apple is still on track for their Nano update.

Of course, that doesnt seem to matter to the stock price right now....
