Latter is far fetched. Main threat is from Iran blocking Gulf shipping IMO and unlikely they will do that unless provoked a lot more. I think Israel's reaction is a bit out of proportion in both the Hamas and Hizballah cases. I think Olmert is trying to establish hawkish credentials as he has been talking about a unilateral West Bank withdrawal and doesn't want that to signal weakness.
