My father loved the stoics.

Like you, I made the argument for stoicism shortly after 911, and was of course hooted out of the room.

Its tough being ahead of one's own time. <g>

I love the Stoics, too. Marcus Aurelius, now that's a good read.

But I think the way the Buddhists look at suffering is useful, too, that's it's an illusion, so Buddhists don't get into a tizzy, either.

And then there's the class aspect Lane3 mentioned, that it's considered beneath dignity to fly off the handle or lose your cool.
