One huge problem, as I see it, is that the terrorists went after legitimate targets, and the Israelis are not. As was already mentioned on the thread the Arabs hate Israel, so I don't think Israel can sink any lower in terms of the esteem of the Arabs, but the rest of the world can lose patience with Israel.

I'd be startled if the US would have been so mild in its criticism if we'd shelled and blockaded Dublin, bombed Galway and sent tanks into Tyrone in reprisals for IRA actions, but hey. Shame we didn't try?

If Northern Ireland was an independent country with a land border with the rest of the UK (I guess without Northern Ireland it would just be Great Britain). If the IRA had a history of firing rockets across the border, and the government of Northern Ireland either could not or would not do anything to control the IRA. If the IRA made an armed raid over the border and killed a couple and captured a couple of British soldiers, and than if the Great Britain invaded Northern Ireland in response I imagine the American criticism (if there was any criticism at all) would be mild.
