This could be one of the reasons. But IMHO, MSFT is a company at a loss for ideas and direction (and has been for many years). It's just casting about for anything that might boost its image and, to some extent, internal morale. Were it not for the monopoly of Windows and Office, it would not be able to buy its market share in other areas. I'm just completely amazed at how a company, with an army of smart people, is unable to develop some original hits. Goes to show that IQ (in the traditional sense of the word) and creativity do not necessarily come in the same package.
