The right of an unpopular group to march in a public place is never a popular notion, and if put to a democratic vote would always fail-- that's why we have a judicial branch. The "reaonsable moderates" go along, too stupid to realize the precedent they are establishing.

I can understand your reasons for making the vote public.

When there is a next vote I'll ask everyone in a secondary question to declare whether they think it should be made public and act accordingly.

Sounds like a good idea

I sort of think to remember that Mani did this too

Back and forth -

2000 Just vote totals

2001 All results public

2002 Only vote totals are public

Rink, re: Should the vote be made public?

I think there are good reasons to do it either way. The big advantage for public is that you as the moderator don't have to worry about any false accusations.

I still think the best way (which happens to be the easiest way for you) to do it is to let the 'votes' themselves be public posts on this OT board. Then you don't have to mess with PM's or emails at all. Plus you are assured that the voters are actual SI members, whereas emails could be anybody posing as anybody. Votes/posts here would be completely public, without that interim 'private' step which coincidentally requires more work on your part to collect/collate/count votes from different sources.

All of the additional comments you received would also be public information (assuming people chose to disclose their comments in a public post).

FWIW, it appears this board has actually worked fairly well to keep the OT vote discussion over here and maintain some semblence of order on the Mod thread.

As for the lynching thing, yeah, anybody on the receiving end of a suspension vote (and some rare folk in the 'no' camp) are going to cry foul. No way around it. Part of the territory. It was a fair trial, and now its time to cut down the body... and drag it through town! ;-o (absolutely j/k, of course! i'm not the moderator so i can say that sort of thing. :-P actually, this isn't moderated so I can say anything...)

"anything"

ha!
