Where the Poles defeated them they retreated into a wood, and the Mongols were induced to chase them. The Knights' armor was at maximal advantage and personal close encounter most injurious to the lighly armed and armoured warrior, their bows not being effective at closer range in dense cover. Their style of war, fire arrows from horseback, wheel and retreat quickly was most effective on a plain, where most of their conquests took place. Although they were also effective at many forms of warfare, they were not prepared for a change in tactics and a stubborn organized resistance that these European knights evinced. This led to the unprecedented destruction of the Mongol Army, from which they never recovered. So it is said. But there is controversy here as perhaps they were not so resoundingly defeated.
