From a blogger in Lebanon: Saturday, July 22, 2006 Lebanese media targeted, US speeds up bomb delivery to Israel The Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation-- which has been doing a great job covering the war, airing talk shows where people from across the political spectrum engage in debates and even question Hizbullah's tactics and motives-- LBC today received its reward from the Israeli war machine: A relay station in Fatqa in the north was bombed, knocking the station off the air in many parts of the country. This station has nothing to do with Hibzullah's al-Manar, whose transmission tower in Terbel in the north was targeted, along with LBC's and Future TV's. Relay stations all over the country are being targeted. Mobile telephone masts were also destroyed. Suleiman Chidiac from LBC was killed in the attack-- another name to add to the list of Lebanese media workers who died for Lebanon over the past two years. Israel cannot claim to be better than the Assad regime, which killed a slew of journalists and tried to assassinate LBC news anchor May Chidiac. Israel's war planners, and the United States officials who have blind faith in them, might want to remember the time Hizbullah's hooligans rioted because an LBC programme caricatured their holy leader in a satire show. LBC may be considered a Christian channel started by the Lebanese Forces in the 1980s, but they have since shook off much of that bias, though not completely, and their coverage of late has been more objective than Aljazeera's. Lebanese are now deprived of LBC and Future TV, two stations that were instrumental in shaping public opinion after the Hariri assassination. What a shame. This is another indication that the Israeli war machine is blind and indiscriminate. Meanwhile, Israel is broadcasting footage of its tanks as they roll into Lebanon. Mind you they are not calling it invasion. It's a "limited operation". An army spokesman said Israeli forces were making only limited thrusts a few kilometres (miles) into south Lebanon. "It will probably widen, but we are still looking at limited operations," he said. "We're not talking about massive forces going inside at this point." This is the message to Lebanon: you either scream love for Israel from rooftops, or you're dead. And the delivery of death to Lebanese civilians is being expedited, thanks to my beltway neighbors. The Bush administration is rushing a delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel, which requested the expedited shipment last week after beginning its air campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, American officials said Friday. The munitions that the United States is sending to Israel are part of a multimillion-dollar arms sale package approved last year that Israel is able to draw on as needed, the officials said. But Israel’s request for expedited delivery of the satellite and laser-guided bombs was described as unusual by some military officers, and as an indication that Israel still had a long list of targets in Lebanon to strike. The defenseless civilians in the south and other areas have no shelters to protect them, and no roads to use to flee the destruction. Hizbullah forgot to build shelters when it imposed its infamous "defense strategy", and Israel couldn't care less. As for Bush. He has never seen a dead baby with a hole in his back. War is peace. I'm writing from here because my satelite internet connection is no longer working. My connection suddenly died after I heard a very loud noise outside. In my sitting room, LBC (a popular Lebanese TV station) was turned on. The KABOOM shut it off. I switched the dial. Aljazeera is still on. The Israelis have bombed strategic locations with large broadcasting Antennas for various local TV stations. They also bombed mobile phone stations. I no longer have reception. Neither does anyone else in Tripoli... Update 2. Most of LBC's relay stations were destroyed (LBC News). Only one Manar station was targeted (Terbol). The objective, it seems, was to silence all Lebanese media, TV and Radio. The MTC Touch and Alpha mobile phone networks were severely damaged. beirutbeltway.com
