I'd go with the ice cores and tree rings --- they are going to be a heck of a lot more accurate then any human measurements that are earlier then, say, 30 years ago or so....

(Heck of a lot LONGER look into history and pre-history, too.)

As to modern, short-term records: nothing is gonna beat the satellite data that is now being recorded for the globe.
