We aren't catching flak in Afghanistan because the Sunnis aren't killing the Shiites.

No.. just militant muslims killing moderate muslims..

Since the Iranians would have to cross over Iraq to defend Syria, I find the threat of Iran defending Syria to be limited.

I concur.. But the Iranians can certainly send troops if they can sneak them past the Turks.

But you're right.. it's just bluster and a means for Ahmadinejad to prop up his regime with rhetoric.

I don't always agree with you, because I think you're even more hawkish than I am towards Islam. But I certainly understand your perspective on the region and the religion. Islam has never undergone the kind of moderate reformation that Christianity did hundreds of years ago.

But there are hundreds of millions of peaceful Muslims who have no desire to wage Jihad or "Talibanize" their lives.

..the Sunnis aren't killing the Shiites Not since the US overthrow of the Taliban. Prior to that, the Shiite Hazara were being exterminated:

On Genocide of Hazaras

" The policy of the Taliban is to
exterminate the Hazaras"

Maulawi Mohammed Hanif, Taliban
Commander
Announcing their policy to a crowd of 300
people summoned to a mosque [after killing
15,000 Hazaras people in a day]

" Hazaras are not Muslim. You can kill them.
It is not a sin."

Mullah Manon Niazi
Governor of Mazar-e Sharif
Speaking to a crowd in a mosque after the
fall of mazar city
