You're still confused. Al Qaeda has almost no military power. Their power is of a different sort.

Of course it is.. they have ideological power because the entire region is rife with corrupt and non-democratic regimes and they have an ideology that all muslims can relate to at some level or another.

And all non-democratic regimes are inherently illegitimate because they are not ultimately accountable to the people being governed.

The region is devoid of political options for people to select from.

But the answer is NOT to permit one brand of totalitarianism to be replaced with an even more organized and militant version.

These are fanatics that would have been happy to have one victory and a bunch of defeats.

And you think they don't want to win the whole "shebang"?

We may not like our options, but I certainly don't think the option of sticking our heads in the sand and hoping all of this is just some ugly dream is very attractive either.

That is, unless you're single, well into retirement and have left no children to carry on after you're gone.. Then I could imagine that being indifferent and thrusting the burden of the eventual, and likely far more deadly, struggle onto the backs of someone else's children might be an attractive option..
