The new Sansa e270, $270, offers 50 percent more capacity--6 GB total--and adds other features those players lack.

The 6GB Sansa is selling for $220 on Amazon now, and I expect the 8GB version to be released in the near future.

One possible reason for a delay on the refresh of the Nano is that Samsung had trouble ramping their 8Gb MLC chip last quarter. They said the problems are now behind them and that the chip should become a big part of their volume during the second half.

As with the Nano and some other MP3 players, the Sansa doesn't come with an AC adapter for recharging, and we couldn't find one for sale on the SanDisk Web site. That means the Sansa can be charged only from a computer with a USB port--a potential inconvenience. Nor, when we checked, did SanDisk's Web site offer replacement or spare batteries.

The Apple Store does carry the iPod USB Power Adapter ( store.apple.com ) which should work with most USB cables. There are plenty of 3rd party products that are less than half the cost of the Apple product (check eBay if all else fails). It's an opportunity for the retailer to provide a value added accessory, and the Sandisk website is passing up this opportunity, but their main focus seems to be to highligh products and let the reseller do the rest. As far as the battery, it's unlike the old days with cell phones that needed spare batteries, plus the worst would be without your mp3 player for a few hours to charge (plus it's likely that the spare battery isn't charged either, since it hasn't been used a while). Changing the battery on the Sansa is like changing the battery on your cell phone, an infrequent need. Any units that need a battery today and for at least a year will be covered by the warranty, so no immediate need in the Sandisk website to carry this part retail. I'm sure you could get a spare battery if you really wanted, but chances are it's compatible with some cell phone battery and you could use that as well.
