it is a great frustration to the Russians that Americans in general know so little about what really happened on the Eastern Front in WW2.

Yes.. (and I'm not undermining the sacrifice of the Russian people here), but for the Russian people, unfortunately, they were going to suffer one way or another.

Because even if Hitler had not opted to attack the USSR, Stalin was already preparing his own attack upon Nazi Germany in order to take advantage of it's current pre-occupation with Britain and the US. It's controversial, but the USSR had the largest standing army in Europe at the time and much of it was sitting on the borders of divided Poland and obviously not prepared for defensive operations:

Their positioning close to the border, but not in defensive posture indicates plans for an attack were in the works, if not in 1941, then likely in 1942.

Stalin was not a fool. He knew that eventually Hitler would come after him and the best time to attack was while Hitler was focused upon the battle in the West.

Thus, it's likely that the suffering of the Russian people would have occured either by way of defending against the Germans, or via an assault by the USSR against Germany.
