Buyers could well be shunning premium gasolines because ethanol is now used to boost the octane. The lower energy content negates the performance advantages premium fuels used to provide. Drivers are probably noticing premium grades don't provide the performance they used to, so why pay a premium price for it? Many engines can use premium or regular, with the computer and antiknock sensors working together to find the optimal timing.

People aren't dumb. They will eventually figure out the truth about ethanol, just as they did about hybrids.
