I am trying to put my finger on present-day conservatives trying to use the coercive power of the state to shut people up, that is, by passing laws against their speech.

On the other hand, I can think of things liberals do to impose their own sense of morality on others, e.g., the Boy Scouts don't allow homosexual troop leaders so the Boy Scouts can't use the public pier for their regatta.
