I don't agree that we were merely speaking of laws, I thought we were discussing using the coercive power of the state to shut people up when you don't like what they say. I can't think of an example to match the attempt to ban flag-burning, that's a doozy, but, yes, teachers have been fired for wearing crucifixes to school, and students have been prevented from mentioning God in their valedictory speeches. Certainly it's not legal, but they get away with it because the majority agrees with these acts.
