Canada has its own internal split like the US red state vs. blue state divide.

Most of the Conservatives' support (reminding you that our conservatives and Conservatives are generally quite a bit to the left of almost all of your "liberal" Democrats) came from rural areas but particularly the suburbs around the big cities, while most of the NDP (left) and Liberal (centre) support came from the big cities where most Canadians now live. (Needless to say, all the support for the other main party, the separatist Bloc Quebecois, came from La Belle Province.)

It is a peculiarity of our first past the post system, which I hope we jettison soon in favour of some sort of proportional representation, that the Conservative government came to power with much less than half the popular vote.

It is a circumstance of this particular point in Canadian political history, when the electorate is sick of too many elections in too short a period and cynical about politicians in general due to scandals, that none of the opposition parties dare provoke an election for another year or two.
