RJA,

I don't disagree with you at all. I think its a very dangerous stock market right now. Those overweight energy like Dale, and those in precious metals are pulling the weight. Rest of the market stinks and I envision it getting worse. Speculatius is correct, so far a decline of 7% in S and P has been a piece of cake. It's not about what has already happened though. It's about what will happen over the next 3 months.

I drew up some statistics last week on both the energy and mining shares. Last week may not be representative of energy and mining going forward, but it seems to me that energy and gold stocks should be doing better than they are. But if they hold their own in this environment that would be ample outperformance.

During the past week a total of 466 stocks appeared on breakout scan at least one day. Of those 466 stocks only 266 closed up on the week and only 204 showed a weekly gain of 1% or more. On a $15 stock, a 1% gain on the week is 15 cents. Not very exciting.

During the past week a total of 647 stocks appeared on breakdown scan at least one day during the week. Of the 647, only 43 were able to post a weekly gain, in most cases marginal percentages.

In the Major Integrated Oil and Gas group, 5 of the 9 stocks we monitor were higher on the week. The index for this group closed up 1.19% on the week.

In the oil and gas equipment and services group, 18 of the 56 stocks we monitor showed gains on the week. The index for this group closed lower on the week.

In the oil and gas drilling and exploration group, 19 of the 53 stocks we monitor showed gains on the week. The index for this group closed lower on the week.

In the Independent Oil and gas group, 37 of the 93 stocks we monitor were higher on the week. The index for this group closed lower on the week.

In the Oil and Gas pipeline group , 17 of 30 stocks we monitor were higher on the week. The index for this group closed lower on the week.

In the Oil and Gas Refining group, 11 of the 25 stocks we monitor showed gains on the week. The weighted index for this group was lower on the week.

In the broad metals and mining group, 46 of the 176 stocks we monitor were gainers on the week. The weighted index for this group closed marginally lower.
