It's worth pointing out that the so-called Dionysian urge - to let go, get drunk, get high, have an orgy, all that sort of thing - is also part of our makeup. The baboon man (whose name escapes me) argued that mind-altering drugs appeal to us precisely because they provide some escape from the tyranny of self-awareness. The more intelligent the ape, the more powerful the control of the higher brain functions (is this what Freud called the id?), and consequently the greater the desire to escape from self-control. Something like that, anyway.
