"Does that make me an elitist?"

Well, I've been so accused for that same reason. It's ironic that the word has come to have a pejorative connotation, considering that membership of an "elite" involves some sort of excellence or superiority. Nobody would object to being described as a member of the tennis elite, for example.

Of course most fields of intellectual endeavour (those that are not unduly politicized) are elitist. What are Nobel laureates but the elite of their disciplines? Their superiority is universally recognized - within scientific disciplines, at any rate. But then science is not subject to democratic decision-making.

The issues of correct grammar and spelling are contentious. When I was young I used to argue with my father about this. I used to take the line that is very popular nowadays - what does it matter, as long you understand what's meant? He pointed out, as you do, that imprecision increases the chance of a misunderstanding. Now I've become my father, and as they did him, faulty spelling and grammar annoy me (maybe you too) even when there's no significant chance of misunderstanding. It's either right or wrong, dammit!

It has to be said, though, that sometimes the "correct" mode of expression has been used as a way to exclude people, e.g. people with the wrong accent. The anti-elitists do have some ammunition.

By the way, I was responsible for elmatador adding the "lose not loose" admonition to his board header, after I saw this misuse one too many times and cracked. I was tickled. <g>
