I rarely visit Yahoo. When I do, I do often click on the most recommended posts simply because the volume of posts there is overwhelming (as is the signal to noise ratio). That being said, I must say that that system doesn't help me much at all. It seems that the most recommended posts are by whichever longs are perceived as shouting down the naysayers the loudest. Yawn.

SI's ability to read multiple posts in a row coupled with a much lower volume of posts works great for me. If I do encounter tons of posts, I'll look for names I know and start reading there.

That being said, it would be fun to see SI have a rating system simply because it would be interesting to what sort of viewership is out there. However, I think the system will be abandoned very quickly because with the moderated boards you are going to see way too much partisan voting which vastly increases the rewarding of rhetoric over substance.

Having seen its various implementations over the years at both RB and YH, I don't see how it would ever be anything more than "a simple popularity contest" (ASPC). In particular, with *all* levels participating, the freebies would skew it more towards ASPC.

But before I get too wrapped up in the Other 99 Reasons why it's a bad idea <g>, maybe we could see a test run of it on a few isolated threads. That might induce a more open mind.

(In addition to limiting it to L20 members and above, I'd also limit it to stock threads of the non-Pink, non-OTC variety.)
