Our current government is industrial rightwing. They have polluted the concept of conservatism. Barry Goldwater would roll over in his grave if he knew what they were doing with that word. A totally reckless economic and foreign policy, spending like there's no tomorrow, trying to plunder every inch of the environment, and selling out to every corporate special interest crony with a big check. Not smaller government, but much bigger and much less competent government not accountable to the laws, ethics or the people. The other thing Goldwater would hate is the kowtowing to the wacko religious right, whichb is very divisive and hypocritical and takes us toward theocracy combined with industrial autocracy. And our democracy itseld really-really suffers because they're all spin/propaganda, little substance and never tell us the truth about what they're really doing.
