I'd say the chief goal for Israel in this latest offensive is to draw the U.S. into the fray. They are trying to be so destructive to Lebanon that the international community is forced to react. Then, the U.S. will quickly intervene, because American leaders (Dem and Repub) panic at the sight of the UN gaining legitimacy.

I agree. The Hezbollah act has given the Israelis license [in their minds] to do whatever they want to Lebanon. And I think both sides will play their war games until the US steps into the picture.

Actually, my perspective has changed. Bush has given Israel tacit approval to take out Lebanon. His war crimes grow more heinous.
