I think the character of each board will determine the usefulness of the recommendation feature.

The Yahoo refugees had to deal with a much greater degree of noise-to-signal and would rely on the recommendation/system as a filter to bypass a lot of the noise (spam, personal attacks, etc.). With active moderators, the Spam Patrol, prohibition of multiple aliases, etc., SI users are not as subjected to nearly as much noise. However; the exclusively-Yahoo users are not yet aware of that, so we went ahead and deployed it.

Down the road we will create a user preference that will allow the components of that feature to be turned off (hidden) at the user's discretion.

Can't see a value here.

Well, let's put it this way: come across a thread, cheerleader city. Head cheerleader's posts are getting gazillion recos. You "do your own DD" and come to the conclusion the stock is an absolute POS.

Time to think. No?

I'd say there is value in that.

Same thing vice versa.

I'd say there is serious value in that.
