Novak is trying to stay out of prison himself. He outed Plame's name, and unless he can prove he did so by accident without malice, he is guilty of a serious crime and could be prison-bound.

None of us know exactly what's gone on in the Fitzgerald case, except that we can see Libby's defense, that Cheney told him to do it. That is very incriminating to Cheney and Bush. Rove and Novak also share guilt in the matter. It is a serious crime, though Bushies are trying to poo-poo it. But we know it's serious because the CIA demanded the prosecutor. They wouldn not have done so otherwise.
