Don, 1998 actually finished higher for the SOX than it began:

Zacks Analyst Interview Highlights: Apple Computers, KL A-Tencor, Applied Materials and Skyworks Solutions

Business Wire - July 17, 2006 6:01 AM ET

Zacks.com releases the latest Analyst Interview. Today's interview is with senior analyst Larry Orlowski, who discusses Apple Computers (Nasdaq:AAPL), KL A-Tencor (Nasdaq:KLAC), Applied Materials (Nasdaq:AMAT) and Skyworks Solutions (Nasdaq:SKYW).

A synopsis of today's Analyst Interview is presented below. The full article can be read at at.zacks.com.

Why the discrepancy between your positivity and the market's negativity?

Basically, there is indeed a lot of negativism for this group. There are a couple reasons for this: first, we're not fully into earnings season yet, so people don't really know how the companies will report. Secondly, there was some investment bank information put out not long ago that Apple (Nasdaq:AAPL) would fall short of expectations, so this has soured the market somewhat over the last week.

But just the other day, I saw a very positive comment from the CEO of a chipmaker, a company that makes semiconductor equipment, called KL A-Tencor (Nasdaq:KLAC). He said that the company's order book for the quarter ended in June topped its internal target, which came from memory chip demand. He also hinted the company's September quarter could exceed the usual pattern, which sees bookings fall by around 10-15%. There was also some positive talk from the CEO of Applied Materials (Nasdaq:AMAT), the world's largest maker of chip equipment, when he said that 2007 would not be a down year.

So semiconductor companies have been positive. They are seeing orders and solid demand. Yet the tech group - and semis, in particular - have been getting slammed. Therefore, I see many of these companies as very attractive opportunities.

Which companies in particular are you thinking about?

I really want to pound the table on Skyworks Solutions (Nasdaq:SKYW). This company makes all sorts of solutions for cell phones - amplifiers, PA and front-end modules, even more complex devices which bundle the functionality that cell phones need. Skyworks also sells radio solutions. Devices that receive signals and pass them along, whatever functionality cell phones need.

Don, there are striking similarities in the rise of volatility this year and what we saw in 1998. Note the green line in the charts:

Although earnings and book to bill are much better now than in 1998 or 2002 we are still entering a period of time where fear of an economic slowdown is effecting the stock market adversely. It seems to happen almost every four years.
