Power Outage Cancels D.C. to New York Flights

Delta Air Lines was forced to cancel 15 shuttle flights between Washington and New York today because of a power outage that knocked out electricity to New York's LaGuardia Airport. Delta hoped to resume shuttle operations by 3:30 p.m.

American Airlines also was forced to cancel 45 flights out of LaGuardia and reroute passengers to destinations across the nation because of the outage. American hopes to resume service out of New York by 7 p.m. today.

Delta grounded the hourly shuttles beginning at 9:30 a.m. as LaGuardia officials raced to restore power to the airport. Delta passengers at Reagan National Airport were re-booked on other airlines during the blackout.

Delta spokeswoman Gina Laughlin encouraged local passengers planning to travel to New York today to call the airline's reservation agents to confirm the status of their flights before leaving for the airport.

The nation's third largest airline canceled seven of its flights between Reagan National and LaGuardia and eight of its flights between LaGuardia and Boston's Logan Airport.

Searing summer heat was blamed for the power outage that left parts of LaGuardia without electricity.
